Module summary

This module is aimed at students with a prior knowledge of the Portuguese language (equivalent to minimum CEFR A2). In this module students will reinforce and improve their grammatical knowledge and accuracy, both in spoken and written Portuguese, and will develop the skills involved in aural and reading comprehension, in accordance with B1- B2 CEFR. Students will reflect on the use of language and learn how to use language in different contexts including an academic context and formal situations. Topics include social and cultural issues relevant to understanding the Portuguese-speaking world.

Objectives

This module aims to consolidate and further develop students’ Portuguese language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, focussing on grammar in context and the usage of grammar in authentic communicative situations according to different contexts and registers, enhancing students’ language awareness. The aims and objectives will be achieved through the provision of weekly languages classes targeted at linguistic accuracy and fluency, and by engaging students with authentic Portuguese-language materials relevant to life in the Portuguese-speaking world.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

- Express their thoughts and ideas clearly, coherently and with focus in both written and oral Portuguese to a standard of B1-B2 of the CEFR
- Use appropriate register of Portuguese language in different communicative situations, including formal contexts

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

- Show intercultural understanding and awareness of Portuguese-speaking cultural contexts
- Adopt effective and proactive language learning strategies

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Written and oral feedback is regularly given to students to identify and address any difficulties at an early stage:

· Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor of their oral and written production during language classes.
· Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor on written tasks through homework set weekly.
· Students will have some self-assessed homework, which will be set by the tutor. Answers for those pieces of homework will be available on Minerva.
· Students will receive written feedback on all pieces of assessed work.
